Spring Golf Course Maintenance & Lawn Care Tips from the Pros at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club

spring maintenance

By Lou Silveira, Woodbridge Golf Course Superintendent

Spring is in full swing, and it’s one of the most important times of the year for golf course maintenance—and your own lawn at home. As the weather warms up and daylight stretches longer, our team at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club is hard at work preparing the course for optimal playing conditions. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just love keeping your yard looking its best, here’s an inside look at how we care for the course—and tips you can use for your own spring lawn.

What’s Happening on the Course This Spring

  • Spring Aeration & Turf Recovery
Aeration is a vital step in promoting healthy greens. At Woodbridge, we aerate our greens each spring to relieve soil compaction and stimulate root growth. While this process may cause slight surface disruption temporarily, it results in smoother, healthier greens for the season ahead.
  • Managing Fairway & Rough Growth
With temperatures rising, grass growth accelerates. Our grounds team is actively fertilizing and mowing to maintain lush, playable fairways and roughs throughout the course.
  • Bunker Refresh
We’re refurbishing bunker edges, replenishing sand, and fine-tuning depths to keep hazards well-defined and consistent.
  • Irrigation Tune-Ups
Spring is also the time to adjust irrigation systems. Our team updates watering schedules to align with the season’s changing needs—keeping the course green while conserving water.

Spring Lawn Care Tips You Can Use at Home

Want your home lawn to rival a golf course fairway? Try these tips inspired by our professional turf team:

  • Aerate Your Lawn – Like we do on the course, aerating your lawn improves air, water, and nutrient flow to the roots for stronger, healthier grass.
  • Fertilize for Spring Growth – Apply a balanced fertilizer with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to kickstart vibrant growth and color.
  • Mow Smart – Keep your mower blade set between 2–3 inches. Mowing too short can stress the grass and increase water needs.
  • Water Deeply & Infrequently – Aim for deep root development by watering less often but more thoroughly. Early morning is the best time to water.
  • Prevent Weeds Before They Sprout – Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring to stop weeds like dandelions, crabgrass, and clover before they establish.

Seasonal Highlights on the Grounds

  • Spring Annuals Planting – We’re adding vibrant color to the Club’s landscaping with seasonal blooms like Marigolds, Zinnias, Pansies, Salvia, and Verbena.
  • Targeted Weed Prevention – Our team is applying a pre-emergent herbicide (Dimension) to combat common spring and summer weeds.
  • Fairway Aeration in Progress – With our new Toro ProCore 864 aerator, we’re hollow-tining all fairways to ensure premium playing surfaces from tee to green.

Whether you’re dreaming of teeing off on perfectly groomed greens or just want your front lawn to look golf-course worthy, these spring strategies make all the difference.
